Daniel Lloyd, GCN’s very own ex-professional cyclist, shows you how to make a beetroot and carrot juice to drink before training or racing.
Team Sky and Omega Pharma-QuickStep often have beet juice on the breakfast table before races. Current thinking holds that the nitrates in beets have several benefits when it comes to endurance sport, with one of the key ones being that they increase oxygen-carrying capacity. Sounds good to us! And Daniel says its tastes ok too…
You will need:
4 beets or beetroots. Roughly equal to 1lb or 450g
5 carrots. Roughly equal to 1.5lb or 650g
Juice the beet(root)s and carrots and enjoy!
As with any dietary change, it’s worth experimenting with this. Beetroots can sit quite heavily on the stomach so don’t try this for the first time just before the biggest race of your year!
