As an ultrarunner and endurance athlete, I receive compliments about my dedication to training, the distances I’ve run, and the events I’ve completed. My videos get comments thanking me for motivating people to start working out, for inspiring someone to sign up for their first half marathon or ultra, and for providing an insight into the balance of family, friends, work, and training. While it may appear like things in my life are smooth, happy, and free of conflict, I can assure you that is not always the case. My life is not much different than many of yours; there are good days and bad days, stressful times, and sad times. Life, to me, is like one big ultra, and the key to success for me in both life and competing has been finding a nurturing, honest, selfless, compassionate, patient, faithful, respectful, thoughtful, and supportive crew chief.
Fourteen years ago today, I meet my crew chief, my wife in Europe, Brussels, Belgium, to be exact while attending a tradeshow. I can honestly say that I owe much of my success in life to her. The volume of training I can do, the healthy meals I eat, the clean clothes I wear, my ability to travel for work, and races are all because of her. The scheduling, dropoffs, coordination, shopping, errands, homework, and the experiences our children have are primarily because of her.
In life, as in racing, there are highs and lows, times you want to quit, times you question why are you are trying, why did you start this. You question the path you choose or dream about the one you didn’t. You feel like to have to stop. That only the option is to quit.
I admit that I fall victim to this at times, but then there’s that moment; it could be a look from her, something the kids say, an event in the world, a death, or getting hurt, something that brings you back to reality, out of the dark and back into the light. Suddenly, it becomes so clear how lucky I am to be living the life that I have; my wife, my kids, my family, my friends, my career.
I am so blessed, and I am so grateful to get to share this incredible journey with such a fantastic crew chief.
